The Ophthalmic Pathology and Ocular Oncology Service provides expert analysis and diagnosis of eye diseases and disorders in the L. F. Montgomery Ophthalmic Pathology Laboratory, under the direction of Emory Eye Center’s ophthalmic pathologist, Hans E. Grossniklaus, MD, MBA.
The Montgomery Lab is a diagnostic and research laboratory, licensed by the Georgia Department of Health and Human Services, that is an international resource for the evaluation of ophthalmic pathology specimens from local, regional and remote ophthalmologists and pathologists. Diagnostic services include surgical pathology evaluation, cytology, and electron microscopy evaluation of ophthalmic pathology specimens.
Emory Eye Center’s (EEC) ocular pathologists serve as a liaison between basic science research and the clinical care of patients with ocular and periocular malignant tumors. As part of the Ocular Oncology Service, ocular oncology patients are evaluated and treated.

Ophthalmic Pathology Research
The theme of research in our ophthalmic pathology laboratory is translating basic science research from the laboratory into clinical ophthalmology care. This concept is called applied ophthalmic pathology, or clinical ophthalmic pathology.
This research focuses on two main areas: age-related macular degeneration, in particular, the pathobiology of choroidal neovascularization and ocular melanoma, in particular, the study of methods to control ocular melanoma metastasis. The laboratory is part of the NIH Core Facility Grant, and individuals within the laboratory have received funding from Research to Prevent Blindness and Fight for Sight.
Clinical Fellowship in Ophthalmic Pathology/Oncology
The ophthalmic pathology/oncology fellowship
is a one or two-year fellowship open to post-ophthalmology residents. The fellow is responsible for gross and microscopic examination of all surgical pathology specimens and assisting in ocular melanoma and retinoblastoma clinics. The fellow actively participates in resident and medical student education, including preparation of lectures and conferences including ocular oncology tumor board and clnicopathologic correlation conference. Research opportunities and clinical projects are available contingent on the applicant's experience and abilities. A stipend is available, and submission of research fellowship grants is encouraged on an individual basis. The fellowship participates in the match program.
