Sayantan Datta, MSc, PhD

Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology
Research (Basic Science) Section

Sayantan Datta, MSc, PhD is an Assistant Professor at the Emory Eye Center. He completed his postdoctoral research at Wilmer Eye Institute, Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. He is a recipient of K99/R00 Pathway to Independence Grant Award from NEI/NIH. Sayantan completed his PhD in Human Genetics with focus on mitochondrial DNA defects in cancer cells from Indian Statistical Institute/Jadavpur University, India.

Areas of Research Interest

Datta lab studies molecular pathophysiology of age-related macular degeneration (AMD) in retinal pigment epithelial (RPE) cells. The overarching interest of the lab is to study mitochondrial function (mitophagy) and oxidative stress response in iPSC-RPE using cell biology and ‘omics’ approach and implementing small-molecule based therapies in mouse models. Current projects in the lab involve looking at EMT (epithelial to mesenchymal transition) and interferon signaling in the RPE.

The lab is funded through NIH grant and a Departmental start-up fund.

Open Positions

Datta lab is actively hiring postdoc fellows, research technicians, undergrads and visiting students. Interested candidates directly contact the PI at sdatt27@emory.edu.
