Rachel Shah, MD

Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology
Section of Vitreoretinal Surgery and Diseases

Rachel Shah, MD, joined Emory Eye Center’s faculty in October 2019. She is a medical retina specialist in the department’s vitreoretinal surgery and diseases section.

Dr. Shah graduated from the University of Pennsylvania with a bachelor’s degree in biology. She then earned her MD at the University of Michigan Medical School. Her one-year transitional internship was completed at Henry Ford Hospital before beginning her ophthalmology residency at Albert Einstein College of Medicine. After residency, Dr. Shah completed a medical retina fellowship at Emory.

During her fellowship, Dr. Shah was the lead author on research presented at the 2019 ARVO meeting. The work, “Association between a newly described pigmentary maculopathy and pentosan polysulfate sodium,” represented groundbreaking research by several Emory Eye Center faculty members and trainees.

“I was interested in ophthalmology because of the huge impact on patient quality of life,” Dr. Shah says. “I’ve found it very fulfilling to form long-term relationships with my patients, whether in helping to manage their diabetic retinopathy or taking them through cataract surgery successfully. Medical retina and uveitis are fascinating to me because of the wide spectrum of diseases and all the amazing tools we have at our disposal to help treat our patients.”

National Recognition

Dr. Shah is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology, and Women in Ophthalmology. She served as an Advocacy Ambassador to the AAO Mid-Year Forum in 2017 under the sponsorship of Women in Ophthalmology.
