March 30, 2021 | 5 Emory Eye Center Providers Earn Doctors' Day Nominations. In honor of National Doctors' Day on Tuesday, March 30 the Emory University School of Medicine Recognitions Committee asked for nominations of doctors who demonstrate�dedication to improving the health and well-being of our patients and community through the care they provide, the research they conduct, and/or their efforts to teach and inspire young doctors.�

March 1, 2021 | Hans E. Grossniklaus, MD, MBA, appointed to American Board of Ophthalmology's Board of Directors. Emory Eye Center's director of ocular oncology and pathology services, Hans E. Grossniklaus, MD, MBA, has been appointed to the American Board of Ophthalmology's (ABO) Board of Directors, effective January 1, 2021. He will serve a four-year term.

February 22, 2021 | Jessica Shantha, MD, chosen for ARVO Women's Leadership Development Program. Emory Eye Center is pleased to announce ophthalmologist, Jessica Shantha, MD, has been selected to participate in the 2020-2021 Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO) Women's Leadership Development Program.

February 4, 2021 | Emory Eye Center is part of a 10-year nationwide study that examines children after cataract removal. Emory Eye Center glaucoma specialists participated in a multi-center, 10-year follow-up clinical trial called the NEI funded Infant Aphakia Treatment Study (IATS). The study findings discovered that children who had undergone cataract surgery as an infant may have an increased risk of glaucoma-related vision damage later in life.

November 18, 2020 | Emory Eye Center to host 4th annual Southeastern Vision Research Conference. Emory Eye Center will host the fourth annual Southeastern Vision Research Conference (SEVRC) on Monday, December 7 at 5 p.m. and Tuesday, December 8 at 9 a.m. The event will be held in collaboration with two other vision research groups from Vanderbilt University Medical Center and the University of Alabama at Birmingham. The virtual, two-day seminar is a way for research scientists to celebrate an exchange of excellence in vision research and science.

November 5, 2020 | AAO 2020 Goes Virtual: Emory Eye Center faculty to lead educational efforts in an online collaborative environment. Emory Eye Center physicians will help educate other providers at the American Academy of Ophthalmology's (AAO) virtual annual conference this month.

October 29, 2020 | Eight Emory Eye Center faculty recognized at the 2020 Celebration of Faculty Excellence. Eight Emory Eye Center faculty members were recognized at the Emory University School of Medicine's (SOM) Celebration of Faculty Excellence ceremony on Wednesday, Oct. 28, 2020. Each year, the School of Medicine honors faculty in a variety.

October 27, 2020 | Allen D. Beck, MD, appointed F. Phinizy Calhoun, Sr. Chair of Ophthalmology. Allen D. Beck, MD, director of Emory Eye Center, has been appointed F. Phinizy Calhoun, Sr. Chair of Ophthalmology by Emory University School of Medicine, effective June 1, 2020. Dr. Beck has served as chair and director of Emory Eye Center since May 2019 and interim chair and director of the department since March 2016.

August 18, 2020 | Emory Eye Center earns a spot in U.S. News & World Report's healthcare rankings for 22nd consecutive year. Emory Eye Center of the Emory University/Emory Healthcare network is once again recognized as one of the top ophthalmology centers in the nation, according to the prestigious U.S. News & World Report's 2020-21 rankings of American’s top hospitals.

July 16, 2020 | Eight Emory Eye Center faculty make Atlanta's "Top Docs" list. Atlanta magazine's annual Top Doctors' issue has hit newsstands with eight Emory Eye Center physicians included. They are Maria Aaron, MD; Allen D. Beck, MD; Valerie Biousse, MD; Hans E. Grossniklaus, MD, MBA; G. Baker Hubbard III, MD; Nancy J. Newman, MD; Priyanka Sood, MD; and Ted H. Wojno, MD.

June 22, 2020 | Emory Eye Center Receives Humanitarian Award from Sidra Tree Foundation. Emory Eye Center providers Soroosh Behshad, MD, MPH, and Natalie C. Weil, MD, have received the Sidra Tree Foundation Project Award from the Sidra Tree Foundation. Dr. Behshad is a cataract and cornea surgeon in the section of Cornea, External Disease and Refractive Surgery and serves as chief of Ophthalmology Services at Emory Saint Joseph's Hospital. Dr. Weil, a pediatric and adult strabismus surgeon, is an assistant professor in the section of Pediatric Ophthalmology.

April 27, 2020 | Emory Eye Center neuro-ophthalmologists collaborate with the Singapore National Eye Centre and a multinational consortium to use artificial intelligence to detect abnormalities of optic nerves from photographs. New findings published by Emory Eye Center neuro-ophthalmologists, Nancy J. Newman, MD and Valerie Biousse, MD, along with an international consortium of researchers from the Brain and Optic Nerve Study with Artificial Intelligence (BONSAI) group and Singapore National Eye Centre show that an artificial intelligence deep-learning system can accurately detect papilledema and other non-papilledema optic disc abnormalities from ocular fundus photographs.

Baker Hubbard III, MD, retina specialist and director of retina service at Emory Eye Center, was mentioned in this Atlanta Journal-Constitution article about a mother, who was diagnosed with retinoblastoma as a baby, and how her three sons inherited the same condition. Learn how Dr. Hubbard and oncologist Thomas Olson, MD, director of the Solid Tumor Program at the Aflac Cancer and Blood Disorders Center at CHOA, helped to treat this family.

February 21, 2020 | WebMD Understanding Diabetic Macular Edema. Emory Eye Center retina specialist, Andrew M. Hendrick, MD, is featured in the video, "Macular Edema: Recovery After DME Treatment."

"When we first diagnose somebody with diabetic macular edema, I set forth the goals that my hope is that we can help them improve vision. And we can do that for a vast majority of patients. Nowadays, the standard of care for our patients who have diabetic macular edema involves medicines that are injected into the eye in order to help them recover as much vision as possible."

February 21, 2020 | Research improves tele-eye screening for Veterans. Emory Eye Center's physician, April Maa, is the clinical director for regional telehealth services in the VA Southeast Network (VISN7), and section chief for Technology Based Eye Care Services (TECS). The ophthalmologist divides her time among treating eye disease and performing surgery, helping Veterans preserve their vision, and training ophthalmology residents. TECS is her brainchild.
