A recent Cornea Donor Study (CDS) with cornea specialist R. Doyle Stulting as the principal investigator has found that corneal transplants using tissue from older donors have similar rates of survival to those using tissue from younger donors. The trial may have the impact of greatly expanding the donor pool.
Emory Eye Center is the first site of the innovative Corneal Cross-Linking Study, aimed to slow or halt progression of keratoconus and corneal ectasia. In the past, there has been no treatment for these conditions that cause the cornea to bulge or steepen. In European studies, the treatment has been shown to increase the amount of collagen cross-linking in the cornea, thereby strengthening it.
